Check out these samples.

Bar Girls: Friendly if faulty romantic comedy with a twist: most of its chief characters are lesbians who assemble at L.A.’s Girl Bar. The core personality is compulsive, wryly ludicrous Loretta Wolfe, a female Woody Allen who desires an exact better half but not truly grasping what it means to genuinely and entirely love another person. The film’s shortcomings are made up for by witty discussion and believable characters. Cast includes Nancy Allison Wolfe, Liza D’Agostino, Camila Griggs, Justine Slater, Lisa Parker, and Pam Raines. (95 minutes, 1994)

Black Fury: Hard hitting melodrama in reference to exploitation of coal miners, with Muni as a strong “hunk” who gets in over his head. Practical, and remarkably filmed, but it’s a tad choppy. Muni’s accent makes it hard to comprehend him at times. Cast includes Paul Muni, Karen Morley, William Gargan, Barton MacLaue, John Qualen, J. Carrol Naish, and Vince Barnett. (92 minutes, 1935)

Trading Places: This movie is testing heredity vs. environment by switching a “have” preppy Aykroyd and a “have-not” road hustler Murphy. Murphy, in his second film, is a powerhouse, and makes up for director Landis’ pleasures like a subplot engaging a horny gorilla. Cast includes Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, Kristin Holby, Al Franken, Tom Davis, and Bill Cobbs.(116 minutes, 1983)

Swordfish: Gabriel Shear, Swordfish, knows where there is a lot of money. The problem is that it is in cyberspace. To steal it, he kidnaps former super hacker Stanley Jobson. He then pressures Stanley to comply, or suffer consequences.

Educating Rita: This is an amusing adaptation of Willy Russell’s level play in reference to a youthful working class spouse who desires to better herself, and chooses boozy professor Caine as her mentor. Walters is phenomenal in her film debut performing her role and Caine has one of his best roles as her mentor. Cast includes Michael Caine, Julie Walters, Michael Williams, Maureen Lipman, Jeananne Crowley, and Malcolm Douglas. (110 minutes, 1983)

The Geisha Boy: Jerry, an inept warlock, voyages to Japan with catastrophic repercussions. Imaginative graphic gags; there’s a cute pattern characterizing the Los Angeles Dodgers and, specifically, Gil Hodges. Cast includes Jerry Lewis, Marie McDonald, Sessue Hayakawa, Nobu McCarthy, Suzanne Pleshette, Barton MacLane, and Robert Hirano. (98 minutes, 1958)

Mystery Alaska: Remote Alaskan town’s hockey team is given the possibility to play the N.Y. Rangers as a publicity stunt. There is a hodgepodge cast of characters and an unavoidable big game finale. Crowe is the only one to ascend above the material. Cast includes Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, Hank Azaria, Mary McCormack, Lolita Davidovich, Mike Myers, and Little Richard. (118 minutes, 1999)

Dying Young: Aimless youthful lady replies to a newspaper ad and becomes nurse/friend to a 28-year old rich kid who’s stricken with leukemia. Eventually they fall in love. As perfect stage for Roberts’ charms and as love tale it has its good moments. Cast includes Julia Roberts, Scott, Vincent Donofrio, David Selby, and Ellen Bursty. (105 minutes, 1991)

The Jackie Robinson Story: Simple bio of Robinson, the first black man to play Major League Baseball. Captivating as a historical story; pointed in its presentation of the racial issues engaged. Interestingly, Robinson’s Negro League ball club is named the Black Panthers! Dee plays Robinson’s spouse. The movie is depicted by Brock Peters. Cast includes Jackie Robinson, Red Dee, Little Watson, Louise Beavers, Richard Aisle, Harry Shannon, Ben Lessy, and Joel Fuellen. (76 minutes, 1950)
